Description
With Nature Lister and a device running
the Android operating system you can quickly record the sites you have visited and
the species of birds, mammals, butterflies, dragonflies, moths etc. you see while actually out in the field.
Nature Lister is easy and extremely fast to use; it is designed to operate even where no phone signal or internet connection is available.
Nature Lister allows you to enter trip details,
details of species seen and details of the sites visited.
Sightings are automatically summarised to provide a
running list of the species seen. When used with a suitable
package such as Wildlife Recorder it will
even tell you how many new species you have seen
on your trip.
Nature Lister can be used as a stand alone application or as a front
end to any desktop PC based Natural History records system that can accept
the files exported from it. Nature Lister comes complete with three species
lists of your own choice, choose from country lists for birds (whole world), mammals (whole world), butterflies (North America and Europe), dragonflies (North America and Europe), moths (British Isles) and plants (British Isles).
Nature Lister is completely integrated into the
Wildlife Recorder package to allow easy uploading and
downloading of information. The data from Nature Lister can also be exported to eBird and Birdtrack.

List
Nature Lister summarises the
sightings that you have entered into lists. Lists for today, this week, this month and this year are created automatically.
Wildlife Recorder users can transfer their existing lists to Nature Lister.
The user can create other lists on the device based on geographic limits (site, county, state or country) and period.
The lists can be viewed at any time, giving an immediate
summary of the species seen, and a count of the total
number of species. When used in conjunction with species
lists uploaded from Wildlife Recorder it will
also indicate which species are new to your list.
Two lists can be compared, the combined list of species is displayed with highlighting showing whether species occur in the first, second or both lists.
Exchanging
information with Wildlife
Recorder.
Nature Lister is completely integrated into
Wildlife Recorder allowing the following interactions.
 | Upload
species list based on the current
open workspace. This
enables you to upload a species list for
any country to your device. |
|
 |
Create subsets
of the species list, this allows you to control the species
loaded to the devices so, for example, if you know you will
not be in seeing any pelagic birds you can exclude those from
the upload. |
|
 | Upload
sites list based on the current open
workspace. |
|
 | Download
the site, trip and sighting information from
your device and add it to your
database on your desktop PC. |
|
Exchanging
information with other Desktop packages.
Nature Lister has import and export capabilities which allow
the transfer of ASCII files between a desktop computer and
devices running Android OS. The following transfers are possible:
 | Upload
an ASCII file containing species names to
the device and incorporate the
names in the Nature Lister database. |
|
 | Upload
an ASCII file containing site names to
the device and incorporate the
names in the Nature Lister database. |
|
 | Extract
sighting data from the Nature Lister database and create an
ASCII file on the desktop computer. Extract files can be transferred via a USB connection or can be emailed from the device. |
|
 | Extract
site data from the Nature Lister database and create an
ASCII file on the desktop computer. Extract files can be transferred via a USB connection or can be emailed from the device. |
|
These
files must be in the particular format required by Nature Lister; therefore you must be using a desktop
based recording system, such as our Wildlife
Recorder package, which has the capability of
creating/importing the correct format files.
Exchanging
information with eBird.
Nature Lister can export sightings data in a format which can be directly imported into eBird. All eBird data including protocols are supported.
Exchanging
information with Birdtrack.
Nature Lister can export sightings data in a format compatible with Birdtrack. Birdtrack casual observations and species lists are both supported.
Unfortunately since Birdtrack can only accept imports as Excel spread sheets the export files from Nature Lister cannot be imported directly. The Nature Lister export files must be opened in Excel on a desktop or laptop computer and then saved as an Excel spreadsheet. No reformatting of the data is required.
