Description

With Pocket Bird Recorder and a device running the Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) operating system you can quickly record the birds you see and the sites you have visited while actually out in the field.

Pocket Bird Recorder is easy and extremely fast to use. The palm-sized PC will recognise you handwriting so that all program tasks can be performed using the stylus to click buttons or write notes in your writing

Pocket Bird Recorder allows you to enter trip details, details of species seen and details of the sites visited. Sightings are automatically summarised to provide a running list of the birds seen. When used with a suitable package such as Wildlife Recorder or Wildlife Lister it will even tell you how many new species of birds you have seen on your trip.

Pocket Bird Recorder is designed to be used as a front end to any desktop PC based Bird Records system that can accept the files exported from it. It can also be used as a standalone system, although limited by the volumes of data which can sensibly be held on a palm-sized PC. Pocket Bird Recorder comes complete with bird species lists for Europe and North America.

Pocket Bird Recorder is completely integrated into the Wildlife Recorder or Wildlife Lister package to allow easy uploading and downloading of information. A desktop utility is also provided to allow files to be uploaded from and downloaded into other packages.

In addition to the automatic summary you can request a summary for a particular site, county or country at any time.

Exchanging information with Wildlife Lister and Wildlife Recorder.

Pocket Bird Recorder is completely integrated into Wildlife Lister and Wildlife Recorder allowing the following interactions.

bulletUpload species list based on the current open workspace.  This enables you to upload a species list for any country to your device.
bullet Create subsets of the species list, this allows you to control the species loaded to the devices so, for example, if you know you will not be in seeing any pelagic birds you can exclude those from the upload.
bulletUpload sites list based on the current open workspace.
bulletDownload the site, trip and sighting information from your device and add it to your database on your desktop PC.

Exchanging information with other Desktop PC packages.

Pocket Bird Recorder comes with a Desktop PC utility that allows you to transfer ASCII files between your desktop and devices running Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) OS. The utility allows the following:

bulletUpload an ASCII file containing species names to the palm-sized PC and incorporate the names in the Pocket Bird Recorder Database.
bulletUpload an ASCII file containing site names to the palm-sized PC and incorporate the names in the Pocket Bird Recorder Database.
bulletExtract sighting data from the Pocket Bird Recorder database and create an ASCII file on the desktop PC.
bulletExtract site data from the Pocket Bird Recorder database and create an ASCII file on the PC.

These files must be in the particular format required by Pocket Bird Recorder, therefore you must be using a PC based recording system, such as our Wildlife Recorder or Wildlife Lister package, which has the capability of creating/importing the correct format files. Alternatively you can use any other system if it is capable of making a file in the correct format.
